Kathmandu: 2–3 days minimum

Two days covers the essentials — Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath — but three allows an unhurried pace plus Pashupatinath, Patan or Bhaktapur, and a proper heritage walk through the old city.

Pokhara: 3–5 days, more with trekking

Three days covers Phewa Lake, Sarangkot sunrise and the main viewpoints comfortably. Add a day or two for a short foothill walk (Australian Camp, Dhampus), and considerably more — five to seven additional days — if you're doing a multi-day trek like Poon Hill, Mardi Himal or Annapurna Base Camp.

Chitwan: 2 nights is the practical minimum

One night is possible but rushed; two nights allows for a proper jeep safari, a canoe excursion and a guided walk without feeling like a checklist exercise.

Lumbini: 1 full day, 2 for a deeper visit

A full day covers Maya Devi Temple, the Sacred Garden and the main Monastic Zone. Travellers with a specific pilgrimage or meditation interest often prefer two days to sit with several monasteries without rushing.

Putting it together

A well-paced first Nepal trip covering Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan comfortably fits into 8–9 days (see our Essential Nepal journey). Adding Lumbini pushes that to 12–14 days for a genuinely unhurried pace across all four regions (see Nepal in Depth).
